Sean
Smith plays the guitar... or so he would have you
believe. It is far more likely, however, that Sean actually
plays some sort of magic orb that causes you to feel from
your deepest-self, most exquisitely. Sure the orb makes
guitar sounds, and when you look at it, you even think you’re
seeing a guitar, but these illusions are just a testament
to the power of the orb... and our willingness to accept
things as normal when they are actually extraordinary,
like good music, you know, the one-true-miracle.
Sean Smith’s music is miracle as gift in action. Unlike
many other guitar-men of immense technical skill, Sean doesn't
play just to hear himself noodle, to boast of ability, or
to illuminate some obscure passage of musical history. Instead,
he is playing for you to live the song, hoping
that it will be as much yours as it is his… Empathetic
Song Dwellings: vacancy [blink], vacancy [blink],
vacancy [blink]. You should really just listen
to some of his tunes!
In
his generous way Sean Smith has recorded two solo LP's,
one three-way split LP, and two singles, published on different
labels across the country. Sean has traveled widely, touring
the States with Glenn Jones (of Cul De Sac), James Blackshaw,
Sharron Krauss, and Bird By Snow, as well
as countless other shows sharing bills with Will Oldham
(Bonnie “Prince” Billy), Six Organs of Admittance,
Nick Castro, Jack Rose, Garry Higgins, Bob Lind, and
many others. In November 2007 Sean completed his first European
tour with Spencer Owen and Bird By Snow,
breaking hearts open, in a casual sort of way, in Spain,
Iceland and Sweden. In March 2008 Sean joined Citay,
as one of two lead guitarists.
Up
until now all of Sean’s albums have been exclusively
“solo guitar” (meaning no other instruments,
no other players, no over-dubs), but Gnome Life
is proud to present Sean Smith’s first record featuring
collaborative compositions, and all manner of instruments!
Eternal by Sean Smith, limited and very
beautiful! Guaranteed to grow a forest in your chest.
Sean
has few grand things in the works... Firstly a lathe-cut
10" for our Noh Object
series, this is a set of duets for guitar and piano,
so lovely... and Sean has recently completed an incredible
new album produced by none-other than Tim Green.
The future release of this record is yet unknown, but Gnome
Life will probably have a hand in it somewhere.
